Susan is a native San Franciscan whose interest in fiber arts began at age 10 when her mother taught her to knit.
To better help the customers of the knitting store where she worked, she took an introductory weaving class during her first semester at San Francisco State University.
In that class, she found her calling.
Once she started weaving, she could not stop! She had specific ideas on incorporating different fibers and textures in her weaving.
From the beginning, she knew she wanted to work with shiny ribbons and metallic yarns.
Her weavings were quite different from the others in her class in that she wove functional pieces, first scarves and later larger garments. She soon began experimenting with various fibers, such as silk, cotton, rayon, and various novelty yarns thereby creating her own unique line of handwovens.
In 1993, she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Textiles from San Francisco State University.
Since graduation, she has maintained her own business producing distinctive woven pieces for galleries, boutiques, and for select clients across the country.
She, alone, creates each piece in her collection; choosing the yarns for the warp (usually consisting of 20-30 different types of yarn) and weft, threading the loom, weaving the fabric, cutting and sewing the garment, and hand finishing each piece.
She has a unique quality product and because she is intricately involved in each step of the creation process, she can maintain the high quality she and her customers continue to expect.
She shares her studio with her miniature schnauzers Francis and Xavier and a black lab named Annie, all of whom entertain her throughout the day.
Her other passion is gardening. Many of the color palettes she uses have been inspired from the many varieties of flowers growing in my garden. When she enters a “weaver’s block” she counts on her garden, regardless of season, to reawaken her creativity.
She purposefully creates each piece herself so that she maintains a limited production run. This means her work neither is seen at all major craft shows nor found in every store.
It also guarantees that each of her weavings is a unique piece of wearable art.
She truly loves the art of weaving and the entire creative process behind it. She hopes you see this love translated through her finished product.
